Who we are

The VST_IonaLutheran Campus Ministry has been engaged in university life at UBC for over 50 years, and is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC). The ELCIC has over 180,000 members across the country. It is part of a Christian tradition whose roots stretch back to 15th century Europe.

Our office and gatherings are at the Vancouver School of Theology, one of the most historic and beautiful buildings on campus. Here’s a map.

We have one Peer Minister at Lutheran Campus Ministry who plans events and is here for your questions and care, and can direct you to a wonderful group of on-campus pastors (both Lutheran and other denominations) if you are in need of pastoral care.

Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.

Stephanie Olson, Peer Minister

StephBioPicHey there!  I am happy to introduce myself as your Peer Minister!

I am originally from Edmonton, although I attended the Augustana Faculty (formerly Camrose Lutheran College) of the University of Alberta in Camrose, Alberta for a couple years of my undergrad.  I switched to UBC in the fall of 2007 to complete my Bachelor of Music (voice), in Secondary Education.

I have been heavily involved in the Lutheran Church for many years.  I served on staff at Camp Kuriakos (a Lutheran Bible Camp on Sylvan Lake, Alberta), on the campus ministry team and the campus chaplaincy board at Augustana Faculty, I’ve sung in church choirs, played in hand-bell choirs, taught Sunday school, VBS, well, you name it.  Aside from the Lutheran Church, I was a founding member of a Christian group that was active in my high school (way back when).  I am very passionate about campus ministry, and think it is such an exciting place to see Christ at work!

My personal interests include making music, attending concerts (of any genre!), learning about new music, studying music… you get the point.  I also enjoy foreign films, the outdoors, and home decorating!  I am passionate about recycling, Canadian folk music, third-wave feminism, glass jewelery, and I love a good European deli.  I was married in June of 2008, so spending time with my new husband, Erik, is also a joy in my life.

I look forward to sharing, learning, and growing with you throughout this new academic year!  God has blessed us all so richly, and I look forward to seeing Him at work in each one of you.  Please feel free to stop by our office (rm. 221!) and introduce yourself, or stop by one of our weekly Wednesday night events (see “Feasts”) Or, if you so choose, drop me a line at stephanie@graceubc.org
